The José Antonio Valverde visitor centre is named after one of the pioneering figures in the conservation of this nature area. It is also known as the Cerrado Garrido centre, after the name of the area.
The centre provides information on themes relating to the marshes, one of the principal ecosystems found in the Doñana Nature Area, and the activities organized by companies operating there. It also details the public facilities available. These wetlands undergo surprisingly drastic changes from one season to another. They begin to fill up with the first rains at the beginning of autumn, and remain waterlogged throughout the winter. But when the temperatures begin to rise in spring they start to dry out and the marshes are colonized by vegetation. In summer the area is completely dry. The centre displays examples of typical plant species and the varied bird life found in the lagoons, and also examines the ways in which Man has altered the landscape in the area.
