The La Rocina visitor centre is located near the village of El Rocío beside the lower reaches of the stream of the same name. It is the starting point for a fascinating trail which runs alongside part of this watercourse.
Along the way we can see the traditional chozas, or huts, used by the rocieros taking part in the area’s world famous pilgrimage and learn something about the history of the event. La Rocina is the source of most of the water which flows into the marshes. The natural environment here is very rich, with an intricate network of small tributary streams. The landscape is a mosaic made up of pine groves, fern beds, reeds, heath, blackberry bushes, shrubs typical of monte blanco scrubland such as cistus and aromatic species like lavender, rosemary and thyme. The visitor centre describes these plant formations and also provides information about the fauna present in the area. Migratory and water bird species abound, such as the large common goose, the attractive swamphen and the threatened squacco heron.
